California Western -- Exonerees
Free At Last!
As a last resort for inmates who have claims of innocence, the California Innocence Project truly serves as a check on the California justice system. Earning the release of a wrongfully convicted person is one of our legal systems most difficult feats. Seeing innocent men and women walk out of prison is an extraordinary level of success that CIP strives for...
"For years I spent my days and nights inside of a zoo, dehumanized to a degree that no one can imagine for a crime I didn't commit. Now I am out here, back in society, and I feel blessed. The good people at the California Innocence Project took the time to care and help me champion my cause to find truth and justice. This is the reason that you are able to read this letter today. I still carry the mental scars of my hellish experience. I missed out on so many things the past 23 years. What hurts me more than anything was not being able to say good-bye to both of my grandmothers who passed on while I was in prison. They raised me, they fought for my freedom, and now I finally made it home and they're gone. There is no doubt I have missed out on over half of my life, but now that I have my freedom back, I will try to find my way out here in society. I am currently working towards my goal teaching kids about the reality of being in a gang, and why they should not follow that road. I have a lot to do, my life is just beginning at age 39. "
